King Vortigern chose Dinas Emrys as the location to build his castle. When the castle walls began falling down, King Vortigern sought help from Myrddin Emrys Merlin, the wizard. Merlin told of two dragons in a secret lake beneath the hill, locked in combat causing the castle to weaken. The Red Dragon prevailed and has been celebrated in Wales ever since.
